Twist THEN pull…

One time watching an episode of Frasier, Niles and Frasier took a basic auto mechanics class. At one point in the class they were learning to replace spark plugs. The shop teacher instructed everyone to “twist and pull”.

Niles and Frasier tried and tried and simply could not get the spark plug out. They ended up stripping it and breaking it.

When the instructor came over he couldn’t understand how they couldn’t remove a simple sparkplug by unscrewing it. He said to untwist then pull it out. Simple. Frasier then said…”Oh, well, we followed your instructions to ‘twist AND pull’. If you had said to ‘twist THEN pull’….”

The memories I lost before the age of 12 and the pain I carry around in my chest require two things. Validation and forgiveness. Mostly from myself.

But they have to come in order. Validate…THEN…Forgive. Over the next few weeks there will be a lot of both happening.

When I was 12 I remember going to try out for the world series team. I was still playing for another team so I technically couldn’t try out until the season was over. But the coach came over and told me not to worry about it, I could skip the tryouts, I would be on the team.

I told him thanks but no thanks. I don’t want to skip a step.

Help me to go slow and not skip a step. Validate THEN forgive….
