In God We Trust…

The United States official motto and first appearing on US paper currency in 1956.

Who can you trust? And what does that even mean?

This week has been a hectic week of negotiations with our potential partner on a big business deal and there are things they have put in the deal that we just shake our head at. Things that make me question their motives. Does that mean I can’t trust them? Or does it mean it’s just two parties looking out for their own interests?

I struggle with this a lot.

I try to look out for the interests of others. But in business that doesn’t happen in reverse and it’s actually not that smart. And frankly, that’s more normal. And so here we are negotiating with this other side (big firm in New York) and they aren’t looking out for us as “partners”. My reaction is to not trust and move on. But what should I really be trusting them with?

Back to circles…those in the inner circle I should trust implicitly. And I do. Those in the outer circle I don’t trust with the same things.

I have trusted business partners in the past. Each time to my demise. But that’s really my fault, not theirs. I should have known that when it comes to business, shrewd is the norm, not looking out for others interests.

How does that jive with what Jesus commands. “Look out first to the interests of others, not of yourself”. I don’t fully know yet.

I remember a doctor one time a very long time ago said, “What?…You want me to care about your health more than you do?” While that hurt, I learned an important lesson.

I think that’s what Jesus was talking about when he said, “Love your neighbor as yourself”. Loving myself is assumed so love others like I love myself. But honestly…there are times I don’t love myself very much.

All of this works out GREAT but there is one big fat IF…

IF God is worthy of trust.

Which brings me back to the question…what does trust even mean?
