You Just Never Know…

Last weekend I got a phone call from a guy I haven’t talked to in probably 20 years. We worked together.

It was late on a Friday night and where he was was loud. I couldn’t figure out why he was calling me. More importantly I couldn’t believe I haven’t cleaned out my contacts! I get rid of clothes I haven’t worn in 6 months, how do I have contacts for folks in my phone that I haven’t talked to in 20 years?!

He was at a party. A sorority party.

His daughter was a new student at Baylor and had just pledged a sorority. They were having a party and the parents were all there to support their kids.

It was also a mixer with a fraternity so the fraternity guys and their parents were there also.

He began to tell me a story. Of course every father is incredibly nervous when his daughter heads off to college. Especially sorority life. He is no exception. When he went he wasn’t sure what it would be like. Typical crazy partying?

But this wasn’t like that. It was odd. Then he met a guy in the fraternity. This can’t be good!

His name…Joseph Sherman.

The fraternity…Beta Upsilon Chi (Brothers Under Christ)

Let’s just say that I’ve been involved in BYX for a very long time. It now has over 35 chapters across the country. And someone that was also involved in the beginning was a friend of mine, Jeff Sherman.

Joseph Sherman is his son.

What we started over 30 years ago at TCU ended up having a chapter at Baylor that had a boy as a member that is now a big brother to the daughter of a guy I worked with over 20 years ago.

She is safe. Respected. Cared for. From a fraternity guy on a college campus.

Her dad was in tears, he was so thankful for the community she found and that she is in good hands.

You just never know that something you’re working on or doing or whatever…you just never know what impact it might have someday…you just never know…
